Sam Bartram kept busy

Leeds United 3 Charlton 1

Sam Bartram, Charlton goalkeeper, defied a rampant Leeds attack for nearly half an hour of the second half at Leeds last night. But even superman Sam could not keep it up indefinitely. In a spell of four minutes Leeds skipper Tommy Burden inspired goals by wingmen Ray Iggleden and Harold Williams, which won the match. Just before Bartram had saved five times in as many minutes. Charlton were overrun after the interval and Leeds well merited their tenth successive victory under the Elland Road floodlights. When the game was more even in the first half Eddie Firmani opened the scoring for Charlton with a penalty. He failed with a similar attempt seven minutes later. The equaliser came from from Welsh international John Charles, who was always a handful for Chamberlain, Charlton's reserve centre half.
